Epilogue has launched a new mobile phone app named Flashback that lets you take photographs straight from your smartphone that are reminiscent of the Game Boy Camera.
Using a GB Operator and a Game Boy Camera cartridge, the visuals look as if they’re straight out of 1998, allowing you to shoot through the same Mitsubishi M64282FP sensor as the Game Boy Camera. Even without an operator or cartridge, Flashback’s Software Mode still recreates the Game Boy Camera’s processing using your phone’s camera.
According to Epilogue, “every frame is built the way the original built it: 128×112 pixels (about 14 kilopixels all in, yes, kilopixels), dropped to four shades and dithered into that grainy gradient. In Hardware Mode, that’s the real sensor doing the work. In Software Mode, it’s the same math, recreated faithfully on your phone. Either way, your shots come out the way the camera’s would, not some generic retro preset.”

The Flashback app also comes with an array of customisation options, such as 32 colour palettes, from Ice Cream to Spacehaze, Gold, Tidewater, and of course, the default Grey. As for the controls, you can adjust the shutter, exposure, dither, gain, sharpness, and grain before snapping a picture.
Camera customisation goes beyond photographs, since it applies to shooting videos, too. The app uses your device’s microphone to capture audio, and your nostalgic creations save directly to your smartphone’s library.
In order to download the free Flashback app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, your iPhone or iPad must run iOS 17.2 or later, while Android devices must support version 8.0 or later.
