As Roblox continues to face scrutiny over how it protects children using its platform, the company has cracked down on viral doomscrolling games by removing them from Kids and Select unless the newly restricted game mechanics are redesigned.
Essentially, these doomscrolling games allow users to access a TikTok-style feed for users to watch while earning in-game rewards. Steal An Egg is one such example, as you could use a treadmill to raise your stamina stat while watching an endless feed of short-form videos, some of which were AI-generated.
No more reward-driven feeds
Roblox put out an announcement to creators on the official Roblox forum, stating: “effective immediately, games will not be allowed in Roblox Kids and Select if they combine all of the following: a media feed: short-form videos, images, or story-style posts, a feed that autoplays, loops, or scrolls on its own, a reward, or implied reward, for continued watching.”
A game goes against these guidelines if “it displays a media feed to players: short-form videos, image feeds, or social media-style stories,” essentially displaying social media-like mechanics. A Roblox experience also falls under this policy if it “features or mimics at least one of the following mechanics: autoplay, continuous replay loop, infinite scroll, or autoscroll.” Thirdly, the game “includes reward mechanics that require, or imply the requirement of, ongoing viewing of that content.”
A game must hit all three of the requirements listed above to fall under the new restrictions. According to Roblox, this change was made because “rewarding users to consume a continuous feed of content without natural stopping points is not appropriate for younger users.”
