Marvel Rivals stormed onto the team-based hero shooter scene to high acclaim in December of 2024. However, Marvel Rivals players continue to grow tired of suspected EOMM in matchmaking, something the developers have denied.
When you think of modern online multiplayer gaming, SBMM (Skill-Based Matchmaking) and EOMM (Engagement Optimised Matchmaking) may come to mind. Both systems are frowned upon by players, provoking NetEase to put an end to the rumours.
Shutting down the speculation
In a post on the official Marvel Rivals X account, players are told, “as our game continues to thrive, we want to reiterate that Marvel Rivals does not use EOMM. We are currently working on a video to demonstrate our developer insights on the matchmaking and ranking system, which is expected to be released next week.”
The aim of EOMM is to maintain player engagement, dictating the fluctuation you may experience in online matchmaking. EOMM uses behavioural data while matching players, such as win/loss history, playtime, and behavioural patterns, rather than fairness.
Also known among multiplayer gamers as loser’s queue and winner’s queue, one moment you are running through lobbies, the next, you’re on a losing streak. The idea is that securing wins keeps you playing, and the unexplainable losses keep you chasing the satisfaction of that next win. Whether you play ranked or casual modes, the chances are that you’ve experienced such a pattern.
The upcoming video should be an interesting insight into just how matchmaking works in Marvel Rivals. With so many players convinced that EOMM is ingrained in Marvel Rivals, NetEase will be looking to clear the air, once and for all.
