After testing out both matchmaking variations in the Black Ops 7 beta, Treyarch has explained how skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) will work in Black Ops 7 multiplayer at launch.
Since its debut in Modern Warfare 2019, SBMM has been one of the most controversial features to be added to the Call of Duty franchise. However, it won’t be completely eliminated going into Black Ops 7.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 SBMM explained
In a post on X, Treyarch explained that Black Ops 7 multiplayer playlists will have Open matchmaking, similar to that of the beta, where skill is minimally considered. But the exception will be one rotating Standard moshpit that will also be playable at launch, where skill will be an important consideration (in other words, containing SBMM). Just like the Black Ops 7 beta, there will be the option to queue into playlists that have SBMM and ones that don’t have SBMM. Each playlist will be labelled to show which ones have SBMM, and vice versa.

As expected, Black Ops 7 Ranked Play will have SBMM as you battle it out against players in your division to earn SR and climb the ranked ladder. Ranked Play will launch in Season 02, a date for which is yet to be confirmed.
That’s not all, as Black Ops 7 will also have persistent lobbies on day one, which are designed to keep more players together more often after consecutive matches.
Many players are pleased to see Treyarch confirm its plans to have an Open SBMM system in place, while others are unhappy with the additional skill-based moshpit playlist. The major concern among the community is that it’s unknown if Treyarch tends to have Open matchmaking as the primary focus throughout the life cycle of Black Ops 7, or if SBMM will begin to rise. Only time will tell, as will the size of the divide between the number of players who opt to play in SBMM playlists and those who do not.
