Take-Two to acquire Gearbox for $460 million, confirms new Borderlands game

take two acquire gearbox and announce new borderlands game

Embracer Group is about to bid farewell to Gearbox as Take-Two Interactive has swooped in to purchase various studios and assets. Perhaps the news that fans are more excited to hear is that a new Borderlands game has been confirmed as part of the acquisition announcement.

Take-Two is the parent company of Rockstar Games, 2K, and Zynga. Of course, Rockstar are responsible for hit franchises such as Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, while 2K are best known for their sports games.

Moving swiftly on

In a press release, Embracer Group reveal that the ownership of “Borderlands and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands franchises, as well as Homeworld, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms and Duke Nukem” will be handed over to Take-Two. Also, the newly acquired studios which are Gearbox Software (Frisco, Texas,) Gearbox Montréal, and Gearbox Studio Quebec will be led by Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford under Take-Two’s 2K division.

Pitchford released a statement, claiming “joining forces with Take-Two Interactive/2K will help Gearbox ascend to our next level,” while the President of 2K, David Ismailer expressed the same enthusiasm and confirmed the development of “the next instalment of the Borderlands series.”

However, this isn’t the end of the road for Embracer Group, far from it. They will remain owners of Gearbox Publishing San Francisco and “the publishing rights to the Remnant franchise, the upcoming Hyper Light Breaker and other notable unannounced game releases.”

Take-Two is expected to acquire Gearbox by the end of June 2024. Only time will tell what this deal will mean for the future of our fan favourite franchises.
