Skill-based matchmaking is a controversial topic in gaming, Call of Duty included. As soon as Sledgehammer Games announced they’d be hosting a Reddit AMA about MW3 multiplayer, the post was flooded with questions about skill-based matchmaking. Unsurprisingly, the devs didn’t respond or even acknowledge the questions and concerns around the feature. However, the closest the team got to the topic was by answering a player about disbanding lobbies in MW3.
Before skill-based matchmaking was implemented back in Modern Warfare 2019, lobbies stayed together after a match, allowing players to make friends and sometimes, enemies.
MW3 devs discuss the return of non-disbanding lobbies
During the Reddit AMA, Sledgehammer Games responded to a question by u/DapperYoungMan, who asked for non-disbanding lobbies as they want to play again with both enemies and teammates.
The developers responded, confirming that the team have plans to test this out in-game:
“In a future game update, we’ll be testing non-disbanding lobbies with a cohort of players to determine the performance of such a change. If these tests go well, we’ll explore a rollout to all players.”
Although a specific date hasn’t been given for the tests, all we can do is hope that the tests will work as intended so fans can experience non-disbanding lobbies, once again.
Skill-based matchmaking is less than forgiving in MW3. It is highly unlikely that it will ever be removed, but the return of non-disbanding lobbies in MW3 would be a step in the right direction.
