Mario Kart has established itself as a household name with beloved characters, iconic tracks, and power-ups amounting to a chaotic and competitive racing experience. Thanks to a mod that’s in the works, players may be able to take it all the way back to Mario Kart 64, and on PC for the first time.

Mario Kart 64 was released in Japan on December 14, 1996, arriving later in the United States on February 10, 1997. It was the second-best-selling game on the Nintendo 64, beaten by Super Mario 64.

Back to basics

A modding team known as Harbour Masters has shown off their PC port of Mario Kart 64, referred to as SpaghettiKart. The reveal trailer pulls back the curtain on a native PC port of Mario Kart 64, containing the original cast of characters and tracks from the Nintendo 64 version of the game. As part of the announcement, a custom track featured was teased, but it’s not yet supported. This functionality is expected to allow players to create their own tracks, Mario Kart 64 style.

If you’re looking forward to playing the classic Mario Kart title on PC, don’t get too ahead of yourself. Fan-made PC ports of Nintendo titles have previously been in development before being shut down by Nintendo themselves. Known to be overly protective of their IPs, Nintendo has brought down the ban hammer and flexed their legal muscle against emulators, leakers, and community creations, not to mention the ongoing lawsuit between Nintendo and Pocketpair over Palworld.

Nintendo is yet to port any of their titles over to PC. With the recently released Nintendo Switch 2 breaking sales records, the Big N doesn’t need to expand its horizons beyond its own platform.
