Titanfall 3 actually real, before it was scrapped and turned into Apex Legends. The game was in development for 10 months, then PUBG came along and Respawn Entertainment decided to switch lanes and create their own battle royale.
Former Titanfall and Call of Duty designer, Mohammad Alavi, appeared on The BURNETTWORK YouTube channel to talk about missions that were cut from those titles.
How Titanfall 3 morphed into Apex Legends
Here is what Alavi had to say on Titanfall 3:
“Titanfall 2 came out, did what it did, and we were like ‘okay we’re going to make Titanfall 3‘, and we worked on Titanfall 3 for ten months in earnest. We had new tech for it and multiple missions going. But I’ll make this clear, it was incrementally better, it wasn’t revolutionary.”
“The multiplayer team was having a hell of a time trying to fix the multiplayer, because a lot of people loved Titanfall 2 multiplayer, but the people who loved Titanfall 2 multiplayer is a very small number of people.” Alavi continues, “It’s cranked up to 11 and they burn out of it fast.”
The release of PUBG led to the team to switch direction and make their own battle royale.
Alavi explains, “we came back from break and we talked about it and we were like ‘we need to pivot,’ “We literally cancelled Titanfall 3 ourselves because were like ‘we can make this game and it’ll be Titanfall 2 plus a little bit better, or we can make this thing which is clearly amazing.’”
According to Alavi, EA didn’t even know Titanfall 3 was cut for another six months. It was kept quiet until the team had an Apex Legends prototype they could show them.
If you were hoping that one day Titanfall 3 would be a reality, it seems that your hopes and dreams have all been crushed in the time it took you to read this article.
