The Lamplighters League is a story of adventure, with turn-based combat, and a roster of characters equipped with their own set of unique abilities. The title released on October 3, developed by Harebrained Schemes and published by Paradox Interactive.
Now, Paradox Interactive has admitted that their latest release is a flop and given an insight into the damage that it has left behind.
The Lamplighters League has left a financial scar
Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive said in a press release “The Lamplighters League is a fun game with many strengths. Even though we see cautiously positive player numbers in subscription services, the commercial reception has been too weak, which is frankly a big disappointment.”
He continues explaining that “game projects are by their nature always risky, but at the end of the day we haven’t performed at the level we should. It is painful but makes us more eager to roll up our sleeves and do better.”
Financially, Paradox revealed that they wrote down The Lamplighters League’s capitalised development costs which the studio will now not be able to recoup. This will result in a $22.7m pre-tax reduction in its fourth quarter profits.
In a follow-up statement to PCGamer, a Paradox representative confirmed previous reports that “Harebrained Schemes’ staff was significantly reduced over the summer as the game entered its last phase of development and launch preparations.”
For now, it’s unclear what the future of The Lamplighters League will shape up to be. It’s still early days, so there’s a chance for the development team to turn the game around.
