After months of rumours and leaks surrounding its existence, the official curtain has been pulled away from the now fully-revealed PS5 Slim.

The new revision to Sony’s hit 9th-gen console has reduced its size by 30%, includes some new creature comforts such as a bump to 1TB of storage, and an Ultra HD Blu-Ray detachable disc drive for the disc-enabled model. The all-digital model, interestingly, is now a notch more expensive.

Officially unveiled in a post made to the PlayStation Blog, the PS5 Slim is being touted as a “new look” for the PS5 family. The PS5 “Slim” Disc Edition retains the MSRP of $499.99 USD, whereas the new Digital Edition will now be going for $449.99. Both new models will serve as replacements for the original models, as the older versions are being entirely phased out.

As Sid Shuman, the Senior Director at SIE Content Communications puts it, the new PS5 models have been created “to address the evolving needs of players.” This “new form factor…provides greater choice and flexibility.”

In addition to the 30% volume reduction, the weight of each model has been reduced by 18% and 24%, respectively. The detachable panels now make a return, albeit also with new materials and modularity.

Now, the console’s panels have been split into four separate modules; the two top portions are glossy plastic, while the bottom portions retains the matte finish of that of the originals.

Sony is now also offering more flexibility for consumers when it comes to disc options. Even if one chooses to buy the Digital Edition of the system, the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive can be bought as an add-on for $79.99 USD.

Consumers can be on the lookout for the launch of the new PS5 Slim models online from Sony this November, as well as retailers in the US around the same time. The global rollout will continue “in the following months.”
