Mortal Kombat 1 will no longer receive new content as devs “shift focus to the next project”

mortal kombat 1 stopping new content support

Despite being the latest entry in the series, Mortal Kombat 1 will stop receiving support in the form of new content, including DLC. All existing features will remain playable and the servers will stay up and running, allowing for the continuation of multiplayer battles.

Rumours regarding the end of support for Mortal Kombat 1 heated up after sales of Kombat Pack 2 and the Khaos Reigns story expansion failed to meet expectations. Leaker known on Reddit as _FateUnknown claimed there wouldn’t be a Kombat Pack 3. Further fuel was added to the fire when a Mortal Kombat 1 Definitive Edition was released, containing all existing DLC content.

The end of the line

In a post via the official Mortal Kombat X account, the rumours were confirmed. NetherRealm acknowledge that the team are “hearing players’ requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1, and, while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on.”

To those who have stuck with Mortal Kombat 1 since the game launched in 2023, there’s no doubt that this news comes as a disappointment. However, the developers are shelving Mortal Kombat 1 “to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can.”

mortal kombat 1 ends content support

What that next project may look like, nobody knows just yet. Hopefully, NetherRealm are able to evaluate player feedback to avoid history repeating itself. For now, Mortal Kombat 1 fighters can expect balancing and bug fixes in future patches.
