Valve shares plans to slow down Deadlock updates

deadlock updates slowed down by valve

Previously, Deadlock received bi-weekly updates, with hotfixes thrown in to iron out any issues in-between. However, Valve has decided to slow down the frequency of updates it releases in 2025.

Valve’s take on the MOBA genre first launched on Steam with limited access in early 2024. Regular updates are something players have got used to, but the scrapped schedule means that when a patch does go live, it will be bigger than before.

Deadlock outlines a new approach to updates

In an announcement posted via the official Deadlock Discord server (pointed out by Deadlock Intel on X,) Valve revealed its future development plans. “As we start 2025 we are going to be adjusting our update schedule to help improve our development process. While it was very helpful for us in the beginning, we’ve found that our fixed two-week cycle has made it more difficult for us to iterate on certain types of changes internally, as well as sometimes not giving enough time for the changes themselves to settle externally before the next update came around.”

Deadlock players can expect major patches to “no longer be on a fixed schedule.” As a result, future patches will be “larger than before, albeit a little bit more spaced out, and hotfixes will continue to be released as needed.”

While this may appear disadvantageous on the surface, it may improve the game in the long term. The development team will be able to allow updates to spend more time in the oven, rather than being tied down to a schedule. Hotfixes won’t be going anywhere, so important bug fixes will keep on coming.

The last update Deadlock received was on December 31, 2024, with a focus on balancing the battlefield. It’s unknown when the next patch will arrive, but considering the fact that Deadlock is in early development, there’s still a lot to look forward to.
