Jerry Hook, known for his work at Microsoft, Bungie, and for being the former Head of Design on Halo Infinite, founded Jar of Sparks in 2022. The studio who hasn’t shared any details on its first title has hit a major roadblock, with Hook announcing that Jar of Sparks are seeking out a new publisher.
Jar of Sparks fell under NetEase, who have numerous diverse titles under their wing. NetEase was expected to be the publisher of Jar of Sparks’ debut title, but plans have since changed.
NetEase brings Jar of Sparks to a standstill
A post on the Jar of Sparks LinkedIn explains “earlier today, we notified our team that Jar of Sparks will be halting work on our current title as we search for a new publishing partner who can help bring our creative vision to life. Throughout this journey, our passionate, driven, and innovative team took bold risks and pushed boundaries, striving to create something truly new and exciting for the industry. We couldn’t be prouder of the groundwork we’ve laid together.”
While production has come to a stop, members of the Jar of Sparks team will be “exploring new opportunities.” Although the future of Jar of Sparks seems to be up in the air, existing projects aren’t expected to be scrapped, just paused. If the studio is able to get a new publisher on board, hopefully they are able to pick up right where they left off.
Whether you’re an indie developer or an industry veteran, parting ways with a publisher can deal a significant blow to any project. For now, we will have to wait for further updates from Hook.
