If you were hoping for Cyberpunk 2077 to continue to get DLCs, you’re out of luck. CD Projekt recently elaborated on why Cyberpunk 2077 expansions won’t go beyond Phantom Liberty.
Just days after the Phantom Liberty DLC was announced, CD Projekt revealed that it would be the first and last expansion Cyberpunk 2077 would get.
The decision is final on Cyberpunk 2077 expansions
During a quarterly earnings call that took place on August 30, VGC reports that the SVP of business development at CD Projekt, Michał Nowakowski, was asked how many Phantom Liberty sales might convince the studio to make a second expansion for the game.
Nowakowski reiterates that “the decision has actually been made.” He continues, “As we have announced a long time ago, we’re not going to make a second or third expansion. This is the only expansion of the game, and it has nothing to do with the numbers and how satisfied or not we are with sales or anything of the kind.”
“It’s a technological decision to be honest,” he explains. “This is the last time we’re working on the Red Engine for the time being at least, and in the foreseeable future as you know we are working on the Unreal Engine from Epic. This was one of the key reasons why we decided this was the only one.”
As Nowakowski touches on, the team are parting ways with REDengine. CD Projekt Red has entered a partnership with Epic Games. Therefore, Unreal Engine 5 will be the engine used by the studio for future releases, including the next entry into the Witcher franchise.
Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty expansion will launch on September 26 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
