Starfield may be Steam Deck compatible, but with limitations

The wait is almost over. We are just days away from the launch of Starfield, Bethesda’s first new universe in over 25 years. From the PC system requirements alone, we can see just how graphically demanding the game will be. Therefore, if you’re a Steam Deck user, you may be wondering if Starfield will be compatible with Valve’s handheld device.

Details on whether or not fans will be able to take Starfield on the go via Steam Deck have been scarce. In previous interviews, Todd Howard, game director at Bethesda, has been fairly dismissive, stating that this is something that would be discussed “later down the line.” Although we’re yet to receive any official word from Bethesda, leaked information could shed some light on the topic.

Starfield could be Steam Deck compatible, but there’s a catch

According to the leaked early access patch notes revealed by Insider Gaming, Starfield is Steam Deck compatible. However, “the hardware below the recommended minimum specs and performance may suffer.” The same applies for the ROG Ally.

The leaked update also mentions the addition of a virtual keyboard for players jumping into Starfield on Steam Deck.

If these details are correct, it confirms that you will be able to play Starfield on a Steam Deck and a ROG Ally, even with potential limitations on performance.

Those with early access can begin their Starfield playthrough on September 1, 5 days before the September 6 worldwide launch date. Only then will we see just how well Starfield holds up on the Steam Deck and ROG Ally.
