PS5 Pro formally announced with a $700 price tag, and it’s digital-only

New design revealed for PS5 Pro and price

Perhaps the industry’s worst-kept secret, the PS5 Pro, has been formally revealed by Sony. The new console is coming in just a few months and has an eye-watering MSRP of USD $699.99.

The new console targets full 4K gameplay with true 60FPS support across the board.

“Witness Play Unleashed”

PS5 Pro has been outfitted with more powerful components; a larger GPU, advanced ray-tracing, and AI-driven upscaling technology in the form of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution.

Each of these new components has been crafted with the target of providing 60 FPS gameplay as the baseline, compared to the 30 FPS gameplay that certain games on the original PS5 target when running in Fidelity Mode.

Lead Architect of the PS5, Mark Cerny, explained that PS5 Pro is meant to provide full fidelity and fluidity by offering the performance that players prefer with the full graphical range that developers seek to offer. According to Cerny, PS5 Pro was birthed particularly due to developers wanting “more power” to achieve the full scope of their vision.

Beyond improved performance at higher resolutions, the console will also have “advanced” ray tracing, leading to improved lighting and reflection effects. 8K support, a feature previously advertised for the base PS5 before being quietly removed from later editions of its packaging, is now being touted as a marquee ability of the PS5 Pro.

Existing PS5 games are being updated with patches to make use of the improvements offered by PS5 Pro. There’s also PS5 Pro Game Boost, allowing for compatible PS4 and PS5 games to run at stabilised framerates. This may even outright improve their performance depending on the game. Enhanced Image Quality is another new feature of the PS5 Pro that will enable compatible PS4 games to run at higher resolutions.

Sony has released an official entry on the PlayStation Blog that further breaks down the details of the new console. The highlights are that the console is all-digital, sporting a 2TB SSD. There is the option to buy the Disc Drive as an add-on; the Vertical Stand is also a purchasable add-on.

The PS5 Pro launches worldwide on November 7, 2024 at the steep price of $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY. Pre-orders go live on September 26.
