Sons of the Forest difficulty settings explained

sons of the forest difficulty settings differences

The full version of Sons of the Forest is here and before you jump into your playthrough, you’ll want to know the right difficulty setting for you.

There are five difficulty settings, with a new one making its debut in Version 1.0. Each option is distinct and suited to different playstyles.

All Sons of the Forest difficulty levels

Peaceful is the easiest difficulty available and allows you to focus on the story. It completely removes enemies from the world, so you can build the perfect base and explore without any cannibals hunting you down. While exploring, you’ll find an abundance of loot, including all the food and medical items you need to survive.

Normal difficulty is the most balanced way to play Sons of the Forest. There are enemies and some challenges, but nothing significant. Item spawns remain high and eliminating enemies won’t be difficult, especially when you get your hands on a hard-hitting weapon.

During Early Access, Hard was the highest difficulty. Survival is difficult here, as enemies are stronger and spawn more frequently, while resources are limited. You’ll definitely need to have your wits about you, especially since enemies can sneak up on you at any time.

Hard Survival is a new difficulty setting that is designed to push you to your limits. There are very few spawns when it comes to food and medical supplies. Animal spawns are extremely low and there’s a higher penalty for eating raw and rotton meat. Enemies are more advanced and are harder to kill due to their increased armour and ability to dodge.

Finally, Custom is a personalised experience which allows you to manually choose an array of settings such as enemy health, aggression, the amount of animal spawns, and even how long a day lasts.

Peaceful or Normal are the recommended difficulties for those that are new to The Forest franchise or if you’re playing solo. More advanced gamers may try a harder option, or if you want to take on the challenge with friends, you can play co-op with up to eight players.
