Starfield launched back in September 2023 to a mixed reception, but the future of the space exploration RPG is bright, as Bethesda confirms what’s in store for Year 3 and beyond.
Following the Xbox layoffs and company reset, along with Bethesda making it clear that The Elder Scrolls VI is the current priority, you would be forgiven for questioning what the future of Starfield could look like. However, Starfield is here to stay, and there are plenty of updates for fans to look forward to.
Starfield gears up for another content drop
In a post on the official Bethesda Games X account regarding future projects at the studio, Bethesda revealed that Starfield boasts 17 million players, accumulating almost a billion hours to date. As a result, “Starfield remains an important part of [Bethesda’s] future.”
As Starfield approaches its third year, the studio is working on expanding the Settled Systems with fresh stories, gameplay improvements, and additional updates, while a new Starborn expansion is in the works that’s expected to arrive in 2027.
According to Bethesda, “more than 40% of players already customize their experience through Creations, and we’ll continue investing in creators and giving players new ways to make Starfield their own.” Additionally, creators have accrued over $10 million in royalties from their Creations.
Starfield aside, Bethesda has also committed to working on the future of Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, and its other live projects, such as The Elder Scrolls Online.
The development of The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5 is taking place on Creation Engine 3, described as a shared technology platform the team has been building since the launch of Starfield.
