Upgrades coming to Nintendo Switch Online app for Switch 2

NSO on Nintendo Switch 2.

Big changes are coming to the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app with the Nintendo Switch 2 on the way. For one, it’ll no longer be called that, instead simply being renamed to the Nintendo Switch app. Additional functionality is also being provided for Nintendo Switch users.

A fresh coat of paint

The newly-announced GameChat service is a part of the Nintendo Switch Online membership package. Though, new Switch 2 owners will be able to enjoy it without a membership until the end of March 2026.

Additionally, the library’s selection of retro titles is being rebranded simply to Nintendo Classics. GameCube support has been announced, and will be available on launch day.

Upgrade Packs for select Nintendo Switch games being enhanced for Nintendo Switch 2 will also be part of the membership perks, albeit only for certain games. For now, only Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom benefit from this.

Another interesting improvement being made to the app includes support for displaying 100 of a user’s most recent screenshots and video captures made on the Switch 2. From here, users will be able to quickly share their captures. This functionality is similar to modern PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Even non NSO-subscribers can use this feature.

Nintendo Switch 2 is launching on June 5, 2025. Pre-orders begin April 9.
