Gamescom 2024 is well underway and an announcement coming out of the first day of the show was RoadCraft, an upcoming intense offroad driving sim from Saber Interactive, the team behind the SnowRunner, MudRunner and Expeditions titles.
This time, the focus is on bringing communities ravaged by natural disaster back to life with the help of big construction machinery like cranes, front-end loaders, pavers and more.
From the ground up
Veterans of SnowRunner and MudRunner will absolutely be familiar with Saber’s way of handling big machines. Many missions in those titles have a light focus on some similar mechanics that RoadCraft will be completely dedicated to. With its tagline being “Clear, Supply, Rebuild,” the sim’s objective is direct.
Saber has developed a brand-new engine that will offer a “new generation of simulation” beyond the scope of what was accomplished with its past titles.
Players will have to take into account even more the physics affecting each object, such as the mass and size. Different materials will also be available to use as communities are being rebuilt, such as sand, wood, and asphalt. From clearing debris, to building new roads, there’s a lot of different equipment and scenarios that will be on display in RoadCraft.
“Over 40 vehicles” will be unlockable in the game’s “story-driven campaign.” As was the case in past Saber releases, these new machines in RoadCraft will be customisable with both colours and a company logo.
Eight maps will be available to play through, each sporting their own selection of biomes and buildings. They’ll also all have their own assortment of projects to tackle, as they’ve been ravaged in different ways.
Automation will play a role in getting things back on track, as players will be able to set up routes and centres to ensure relevant tasks are carried out as they manage other projects.
The “craft” side of RoadCraft invites players to make use of the debris they’ll scrounge through by taking them to the recycling plant to produce new resources. To further help with the planning and management of all the operations, RoadCraft will include co-op gameplay with up to 4 players in a session.
New paths ahead
From the RoadCraft announcement, the game looks to be an interesting follow-up to the Runner titles. Of course, fans will be picking it apart to see how it differs and if it truly feels like an upgrade over the past games.
Those answers will reveal themselves in due time when RoadCraft paves its way on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2025.
