Sony backtracks on Helldivers 2 PlayStation account requirement

helldivers 2 psn accounts update

Helldivers 2 stormed onto the scene when it launched in February, 2024. So many players wanted to enlist in the Helldivers that the servers simply couldn’t deal with the influx of new recruits. However, the highly accredited title has taken a nosedive over the weekend after it was announced PC players would need a PlayStation account to continue playing Helldivers 2.

The news was met with backlash from the community, expressed through review bombing of the Helldivers 2 Steam page. The proposed change also resulted in the game being delisted in various countries, prompting Steam to issue refunds.

Taking a U-turn on Helldivers 2 PSN accounts

PlayStation has now addressed fan uproar on their X account in a post which reads:

Helldivers fans – we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward. “

Sony indicate that they’re “still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we’ll keep you updated on future plans.”

helldivers 2 PlayStation account decision reversed

Although the issue has been officially addressed, there’s still a lot up in the air. There’s still no update on what will happen in areas that do not support PS Plus. The game remains delisted in over 170 countries.

There’s still a lot to do to regain player trust and only time will tell how successful the team behind the co-op shooter will be at doing that.
