Helldivers 2 faced some controversy this past week after it was announced that a PlayStation account would be needed for PC players to continue fighting for freedom and democracy in-game. Additionally, this led to the title getting delisted on Steam in over 170 countries where PSN isn’t supported. In the aftermath of the community backlash, Arrowhead wants to know if Warbond: Polar Patriots should be delayed.
Warbond is premium content and to get involved, you must purchase it with Supercredits, the Helldivers 2 in-game currency. In real money, it will set you back $9.99 / £7.99. If the game didn’t take a nosedive over the past few days, it would be business as usual. However, the developers have concerns on whether or not going straight into paid content off the back of recent events is the correct move.
It’s a matter of when
In a message to Helldivers 2 fans, the CEO of Arrowhead, Johan Pilestedt took to his X account to ask:
“With the negative sentiment around account linking, a concern from the team came up about ‘is it tone deaf to release a new (paid) warbond this soon?’ and therefore we are putting it to a real vote in true democratic fashion.”
A poll then asks players to vote on whether or now the upcoming Polar Patriots Warbond should be added to Helldivers 2 tomorrow as originally planned or delayed. At the time of writing, the option to release the content as normal leads with 73.9% and that’s after 109,512 votes cast.
It appears that Warbond: Polar Patriots will drop in Helldivers 2 on May 10, 2024 as expected. Most importantly, this open style of communication allows fans to have their say and bring up any further issues.
