Laminar Research has announced that a new dedicated marketplace is being added to the “X-Plane platform.”
This upcoming storefront is being added following requests from the popular flight simulator’s fanbase over the years and is set to “provide customers with a unique and seamless experience, and create an environment where the fabulous work of our community will be more accessible than ever before.”
In-flight window shopping
With the addition of a dedicated marketplace for its add-ons, X-Plane looks to be a taking a page directly out of Microsoft Flight Simulator’s logbook. That sim was the first in the flight simulator sub-genre to really try such a feat, and so far, it’s been working out rather well for Asobo and its partners.
As for X-Plane‘s iteration, Laminar is promising “easy transactions and seamless installation” for the benefit of buyers. “DRM options” are going to be implemented for the supposed benefit of add-on makers, though actual players aren’t bound to be too happy.
That aside, Laminar’s announcement of the new X-Plane Store is rather simple and light on details. But, it has at least provided a first look via a single screenshot posted to Twitter/X.
Adding a Cessna to the cart
One interesting detail about the new marketplace is that Laminar is describing it as an “app”.
This suggests that it won’t be directly available in-game in X-Plane 11/12 on PC or even, presumably, X-Plane Mobile. While this doesn’t make it as convenient as Microsoft Flight Simulator’s storefront, assuming the buying and downloading experience is truly seamless, then this being a separate app shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
The new X-Plane Store is set to take flight sometime later in 2024.
