Over the past few years, Assassin’s Creed has had its fair share of controversy. This time, many of the games have been hit with a bizarre glitch that has caused frustrations among the community. While exploring, completing quests, and taking out opponents in older Assassin’s Creed games, a multitude of gamers began reporting that pop-up ads were appearing during their playthrough.
The full-screen pop up ad promoted the latest entry in the Assassin’s Creed universe, Mirage, and the fact that it was on offer as part of Ubisoft’s Black Friday sale. You could either close the advert and carry on with your game or purchase Mirage.
Assassin’s Creed pop-up ads were unintentional
In a post released on X, the official Assassin’s Creed account stated that pop-up ads in their older titles were “the result of a technical error that has now been fixed.”
Ubisoft continues to explain that they intended to “display a promotion for Assassin’s Creed: Mirage as part of the franchise news in the main menu of other Assassin’s Creed games.”
The team sign off by informing fans that they are still investigating the cause of the “disruptive” issue and pledge to continue providing the “best player experience possible.”
Franchises promoting their own titles in-game isn’t something new, but until now, it has never occurred while actively playing a game. If you’re loading into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, for example, you’ll see an advert for Modern Warfare 3 (the latest Call of Duty game) on the main lobby screen and in the store.
Since the issue is now solved, all we can do is hope that the glitch doesn’t return while Ubisoft are investigating the cause.
