Nvidia revealed its RTX Video Super Resolution tech a while back. Its party trick is being able to make use of AI to improve the quality of videos in certain programs.
Initially, this feature was only available on the higher-powered (and more expensive) RTX 30 series and 40 series range of graphics cards, but now the functionality has trickled down to the more humble RTX 20 series family of cards.
“Zoom…enhance!”
As Nvidia describes it, RTX Video Super Resolution “is a new video upscaling technology that uses AI and RTX Tensor Cores to improve the quality of video watched in VLC or Chrome/Edge browser by removing blocky compression artefacts and upscaling video resolution.”
In short, it makes online videos look a lot more ‘crispy,’ for lack of a better term.
This artificial enhancement is certainly beneficial, seeing that most online videos suffer from quality loss due to needing to be compressed. Compression streamlines the process of playing videos back, as they’re now optimised for media viewing. While the loss of quality goes mostly unnoticed by the average Joe, more eagle-eyed viewers can certainly tell the difference between a video that’s been marred by compression and one that’s pristine.
RTX Video Super Resolution steps in to ‘clean up’ heavily compressed videos, restoring their quality to as close to their original levels as possible.
A new update, version 1.5, finally brings this tech down to the Turing-based RTX GPUs, which is that of the RTX 20 Series. The update also sports an updated AI model for better processing.
With the release of version 1.5 of RTX Video Super Resolution, anyone using an RTX GPU on a laptop or desktop running Windows 10/11 can make use of it completely for free in VLC (using a special version,) of Chrome and Edge.
More tech-savvy users will know that many other browsers are built on top of Chromium which is the same foundation behind Google Chrome. That said, Nvidia squarely states that no other Chromium-based browsers except Edge have been confirmed to work.
