New PS5 system update introduces various enhancements

Sony has rolled out a brand-new system update for the PS5 and rather than it being a small “stability update,” there’s actually a sizeable amount of new features at play.

Some highlights include support for larger SSDs (such as massive 8TB M.2 SSDs,) compatibility for additional Android devices when using PS Remote Play, multiplayer enhancements and more.

Enhancing the experience

The improved Android compatibility will let more devices make use of the official PS Remote Play app, which allows for game streaming from both PS5 or PS4. This update specifically targets compatibility with devices running Android TV OS 12, such as the Chromecast with Google TV and Sony BRAVIA XR A95L (both of which are officially confirmed by Sony to be compatible.)

Speaking of apps, the PS App has also received some improvements that go in conjunction with this system update. Bringing its usability closer to that of the PS5’s UI, the app will now allow users to react to messages with the use of emojis “and see a preview of someone’s Share Screen before joining the party on PS App.” The same functionality is also now available in the PS5’s native messaging.

Another neat new feature involves using a second controller for assistance. When this option is activated, two connected controllers will function as one. As Sony puts it, “this features introduces a new way for you to enjoy games collaboratively with others or help a friend or child navigate a particularly challenging section of a game.”

On the note of social play, the Party UI has been updated to now allow a user to “invite another player into a closed party without automatically adding the player into the group or creating a new group.” Beyond this, invitations to closed parties can now be sent to entire groups. When wanting to jump into a friends’ game session, users can now more easily see which friends are in an activity that is joinable; an icon that’ll be displayed next to the username.

Other small changes include the ability to enable/disable haptic feedback when navigating the PS5’s UI, along with the added feature of muting the PS5’s “beep” sound when it’s turned on/off.

All of the intricate details of the patch notes for this PS5 system update can be viewed over on the PlayStation Blog.
