Xbox’s Phil Spencer apologises for Redfall

Xbox Phil Spencer apology apologises for Redfall fighting vampires using abilities

Redfall has been considered as an epic fail. From graphical issues to broken assets and the open-world experience feeling quite empty, players are understandably unhappy. For the first time since Redfall’s release, Xbox has broken its radio silence with Phil Spencer issuing an apology.

Notably, Redfall was Arkane Studios’ first huge release under Phil Spencer. With popular games such as Deathloop and Dishonored under their belt, fans were excited to see what Redfall had in store.

Xbox boss issues an apology for the state of Redfall

In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Phil Spencer expressed his disappointment at the response to Redfall from both critics and fans. “There’s nothing that’s more difficult for me than disappointing the Xbox community,” explained Spencer.

One of the issues that Spencer draws on is poor frame rate. “I think back to the announcement of 60 frames per second, and then we weren’t shipping 60 frames per second, that was kind of our punch in the chin, rightfully.”

According to Spencer, “there’s clearly quality and execution things that we can do,” but one area he rules out is limiting creativity by stating, “one thing I won’t do is push against creative aspirations of our teams.”

The Xbox boss elaborates on these “creative aspirations” further by highlighting how he doesn’t believe in forcing a team that has a proven track record on one kind of title to continue working on that type of game.

“Maybe that means I’ll underdeliver for some of our fans out there, but when a team like Rare wants to do Sea of Thieves, when Obsidian wants to do Grounded, when Tango want to go and do Hi-fi [Rush] when people probably thought that they were going to do The Evil Within 3.”

The titles Spencer lists prove that developers can deliver some extremely successful games while going beyond the franchises they’re known for, but this hasn’t been consistent in recent times. Spencer says, “but I also need to have a great selection of games that continue to come and surprise and delight our fans. We underdelivered on that, and I apologise.”

The launch of Redfall has been nothing less than a bloodbath, but at least players can be glad that Xbox accepts this in their apology.
