If there was an award for the worst game of the year, Redfall would be the front runner. Critics and players alike are disappointed by its performance and the unusually empty open-world experience. Apparently, Microsoft already knew that Redfall would be a disaster a month before release.
Redfall was developed by Arkane Studios and it was already being made before Microsoft purchased its parent company back in March 2021. With popular games such as Deathloop and Dishonored made by Arkane Studios, fans were excited to see what Redfall had in store.
Microsoft knew Redfall was going to be a disaster
On episode 095 of the Last of Nintendogs, Jeff Grubbs, who has connections in the games industry stated that approximately a month ago, one of his sources said “Redfall is going to be a disaster.” Grubb decided he would wait and see for himself, but now realises that he should’ve trusted this information. After all, his source was coming directly from Microsoft, showing that they were well aware of the state of the game before launch.
Later on in the episode Grubb revealed that “the way it works at Microsoft is they don’t change anything, they let the studio just keep doing what they’re doing and barely interfere at all.” As a result, the studios are “barely managed” by Microsoft and according to Grubb, they take the stance that the managers that were already there before they were hired still manage those studios.
Recently, Xbox boss Phil Spencer apologised for Redfall and recognised mistakes in quality and execution. However, he refused to limit the creative aspirations of studios. If Microsoft knew Redfall was going to be a disaster, there are questions as to why the game wasn’t delayed or scrapped.
