Final Fantasy 16: Clive’s voice actor reveals he almost skipped his first audition

Final Fantasy 16 Cal voice actor almost didnt turn up to his audition

The main protagonist in Final Fantasy 16 is Clive Rosfield, the firstborn son of the Archduke of Rosaria. However, the main character almost had a completely different voice in Final Fantasy 16, with Clive’s voice actor revealing he almost skipped his audition.

Clive’s voice actor didn’t even know he was auditioning for Final Fantasy 16.

In a video posted to the Final Fantasy YouTube channel Clive’s voice actor Ben Starr, producer Naoki Yoshida and localisation lead Koji Fox discussed the main character. Its here that Starr reveals that he “wasn’t even going to turn up to the audition.” He explains, “I’d had a really, really bad day, “I wasn’t feeling very well. I think my audition was at about 5:30pm on a Friday. I was the last up to play a small role in this game.”

The character that Starr was originally auditioning for was, according to Fox, “very minor in the game” and “only appears in a couple of scenes.”

When Starr was asked to read Clive’s script, he felt that “it just clicked.” He goes on to describe how he started to get emotional, feeling that he was able to “go to places that unlocked parts of [him.]”

At the time, Starr didn’t know he was reading Clive’s script, or that he was even auditioning for a Final Fantasy game. I guess you could say some of that Final Fantasy fate was on his side.

You can hear Starr in action when Final Fantasy 16 releases on June 22.
