Zombies has become a fan-favourite Call of Duty game mode. However, have you ever wondered why Zombies has never been in a Modern Warfare game?
Infinite Warfare (2016) was the last time a Zombies mode appeared in an Infinity Ward led Call of Duty. It continued in Black Ops 4, skipped Modern Warfare (2019), and returned in Black Ops Cold War, with Vanguard following suit. Then, it skipped Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2, but the mode is set to return in Modern Warfare 3 by Sledgehammer Games.
Zombies has been absent for too long
Former Project Director for Call of Duty at Infinity Ward, Brian Bright, quote reposted a Zombies in Spaceland Easter Egg video on X, stating:
“Thanks for this! Good memories, and it is cool people enjoy what we did with IW Zombies. Too bad we were told zombies do not belong in MW games. (Now they are in MW3, lol)”
In a follow up post, Bright said: “Aliens” err the cryptids in Extinction didn’t belong in Infinite Warfare either since the studio was nervous about taking the franchise to space. That is why we did Zombies. Also Zombies in Spaceland was partially spawned from the team making fun of a space COD.”
In the past, Infinity Ward has released Spec Ops as their third game mode, as well as Extinction in Call of Duty: Ghosts.
We now know that the decision to skip Zombies in Modern Warfare wasn’t down to the studio themselves. However, it seems that there has been a change of heart somewhere along the grapevine, as Treyarch are taking the lead at developing zombies in MW3.
