Nintendo Switch 2 requires a phone number to use GameChat

nintendo switch 2 game chat phone number

Nintendo is propelling fans into the modern era by bringing GameChat to the Switch 2. GameChat offers new possibilities and further opportunities for collaboration, but one detail that has gone under the radar is a phone number must be connected to your Nintendo account to use GameChat.

GameChat lets a group of up to 12 people talk in real time while playing games. It’s possible to screen share, even if your friends are playing different games. If you connect a compatible USB-C camera, you can also see each other while playing with GameChat.

Can you hear me?

In a developer Q&A on May 21, 2025, Nintendo was asked how GameChat adds to the gameplay experience. Directly below the question, there’s a disclaimer that reads:

“To use online services, you must create a Nintendo Account and accept the related agreement. The Nintendo Account Privacy Policy applies. Internet connection and paid Nintendo Switch Online membership required. Mobile phone number registration required to use GameChat. Children must get approval from a parent or guardian via the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app to use GameChat. Some online services may not be available in all countries.”

This requirement acts as an extra level of security, with text message verification connected to your Nintendo account used to set up the GameChat functionality. In order for children aged 15 years old and under to be able to use GameChat, a parent or guardian must allow use of the feature in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smart device app. Text message verification for children wanting to access GameChat uses the phone number registered to their parent or guardian’s Nintendo Account.

GameChat will be available to use from the moment the Switch 2 launches on June 5, 2025.
