Nintendo Switch 2 officially supports Unreal Engine 4 and 5

Unreal Engine on Nintendo Switch.

With the copious amount of Nintendo Switch 2 news that has been released today, it’s easy for certain details to slip through the cracks. Now that the cat is officially out of the bag, other companies have stepped up to formally reveal their projects for the Switch 2. One such company is that of Epic Games, who has formally revealed that it is officially supporting Unreal Engine 4 and 5 on the new hybrid.

An unreal array of capabilities

The original Switch already supports earlier iterations of the sought-after Unreal Engine, albeit with some caveats. Due to its limited capabilities, many Unreal-powered games on the system show noticeable visual degradation compared to other platforms.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is a much more capable machine, so it’s not too surprising that Epic has stepped out with day one support of the system. This also shows that it’s had time to work with the hardware and get things in working order for launch.

Back when the PS5 was fresh and new, Epic showed off a real-time tech demo of Unreal Engine 5 running on the hardware. It still looks mighty impressive to this day:

Of course, the Nintendo Switch 2 is not as powerful as the PS5. But, considering it is utilizing the same engine tech, it’ll be very interesting to see how close developers can get to visual parity. It would also be nice if Epic showcased a new Switch 2-specific demo.

While we still don’t know exactly just how capable the Nintendo Switch 2 is, we do know it is a tremendous improvement over its predecessor. With the capability to run games at up to 4K/60fps, along with 120fps support at up to 1080p, the Switch 2 is punching well above its weight for a machine that’s only marginally larger than the original Switch.

The “custom Nvidia processor” (the only detail Nintendo has provided) that’s powering the Switch 2 got quite the showcase with all the new games revealed for the system thus far. More announcements are expected to be rolled out as the already soon launch date draws ever closer.

Nintendo Switch 2 arrives on June 5th for $450. You can see where and how to pre-order here.
