Palworld stormed onto the scene at the beginning of this year, achieving one of the biggest peak Steam concurrent player counts in history. Although the numbers aren’t as staggering as they once were, the game has a dedicated fanbase. Those that stuck around in Palworld were stirred when claims emerged that the open world would become free-to-play.
In an interview published by ASCII Japan (translated by Automaton,) Pocketpair CEO, Takuro Mizobe, confirmed the possibility of Palworld being turned into a free-to-play live-service title. However, the official Palworld X account has released a statement to clear the air on the rumours.
No, Palworld isn’t making any big changes
According to Pocketpair, the interview in question “was conducted several months ago.” At that time, the team were still “considering the best way forward for Palworld to create a long-lasting game that continues to grow.” Since then, it has been decided internally that ” the F2P/GaaS approach is not suitable” for Palworld.
They continue, “Palworld was never designed with that model in mind, and it would require too much work to adapt the game at this point. Additionally, we are very aware that this just isn’t what our players want, and we always put our players first.”
In relation to the future, the developers confirm that they are “considering skins and DLC for Palworld” as a way for players to support the game. Bringing it back to the present day, the “priority remains making Palworld the best game possible.”
With nothing changing regarding Palworld‘s core business model, it will be interesting to see what the future of the game will look like. Its player count has taken a huge dive compared to what it was at launch, and it will take a lot of work win players back.
