Microsoft is once again tweaking the Xbox Game Pass tier options with the introduction of Game Pass Standard. This newest tier will replace the Xbox Game Pass for Console option.
During the introductory period, Microsoft is giving Xbox Insider members a chance to try out the Standard tier for just $1; like past Game Pass promotions.
Standard practice
In the announcement of this new tier, Megan Spurr, Senior Community Lead of Xbox Game Pass, confirmed that Insiders will be able to keep renewing their membership for $1 a month during the rollout. When Game Pass Standard fully launches, it will be on offer for $14.99 a month.
As the replacement for Xbox Game Pass for Console, the Standard tier membership offers the same benefits as before, including access to (almost) the full Game Pass library and select member deals and discounts. The key omission of this tier is the lack of day-one access to new releases.
Consequently, Game Pass Standard subscribers will have to wait before they’re able to add such titles to their libraries. According to Spurr, that period could be “up to 12 months or more and will vary by title.”
According to the announcement, this new Standard tier has been designed “to give players more choice in how they discover and play games and provide different prices and plans so players can find what works best for them.”
Variety is the spice of life
For the most complete access to Xbox Game Pass, if you’re an Xbox console owner, the aptly named Ultimate tier is the true choice.
It offers full access to the Xbox Game Pass library across both PC and console and even Xbox Cloud Gaming. EA play membership and online console multiplayer are also included. The total cost is $19.99 per month, just $5 more than the Standard tier.
Nevertheless, everyone’s budgets and circumstances are different, which brings us right back to Spurr’s comment about Microsoft seeking to offer its customers a variety of choices.
If you’re an Xbox console owner, you can freely sign up for the Xbox Insider program via the Microsoft Store and take the Standard tier for a cheap test drive during its introductory period. The full availability of this new tier will be announced at a later date.
