After a (rare) pre-announcement a few weeks ago, Nintendo has officially confirmed that it will be airing its 2024 Nintendo Direct tomorrow—June 18.
This typical summertime Direct presentation is slated to be around 40 minutes and will focus on Switch titles releasing in the second half of 2024. While every Direct has a pretty big impact on the community, this one in particular is capturing a lot of interest for one simple reason: mystery.
Foggy horizons
Before tomorrow, Nintendo’s current release schedule is incredibly thin; all of the remaining known titles will be out and about before the end of summer. Thus, fans are eagerly waiting to see what the Big N has up its sleeves for the rest of the year.
Of course, the biggest outlying factor in all of this is the looming presence of the “Switch successor”—as Nintendo first referred to it a few weeks ago. In that same confirmation was when this upcoming Nintendo Direct was mentioned.
No news of this new system will be part of the Direct, leaving the floor open to reveal what is expected to be the last batch of big titles for the current Switch.
On that note, fans are curious as to exactly how big these reveals will be. Considering that there is likely a slew of launch games being prepped for the Switch successor, it will be interesting to see how the company plans to navigate keeping a decent cadence for the existing hardware.
History shows that Nintendo systems, even the most successful of them, typically have very mundane twilight years.
The Switch is already at a point where it’s doing far better in this regard than any of its predecessors, so there’s strong hope Nintendo will continue to ride that wave with the expectation of a proposed smooth transition to the next console. Thus, the 2024 Nintendo Direct will give us a good indication as to how they might happen.
