SCS Software has confirmed yet another state for American Truck Simulator is on the near horizon: the “Hawkeye State” of Iowa.
This confirmation is riding the coattails of other recent announcements: Missouri and Arkansas, in addition to the recent release of Nebraska just a few weeks ago.
Covering ground
Iowa is located in the upper Midwestern region of the United States, with Illinois and Wisconsin to the east, Missouri to the south, and Nebraska and South Dakota making up the western border.
This is the 26th largest state in the USA in terms of total area, but it’s home to just a little over 3 million people. Thus, like many of the other neighbouring states, Iowa has a lot of natural beauty to go around.
From grasslands in the east, to prairie plains to the west, there’s not much elevation here, but there is a lot of rolling scenery, particularly along the grand Mississippi River which borders the state.
The city of Des Moines is the state capital and will be featured here in the map expansion, but Iowa’s main draw for truckers is its extensive agricultural industry. Thus, there will be a variety of goods to shunt to and fro, particularly corn.
As per usual with new expansion announcements from SCS, a release window has not yet been provided. However, considering the speed at which the team seems to be moving, it appears likely that this, along with Arkansas and Missouri, should hopefully be out on the market by year’s end. Of course, time will tell.
Map expansions galore
This back-to-back action from SCS is quite interesting, given just how long it has taken the studio to get to this point. American Truck Simulator has been out for 8 years so far and started with only three states. It’s amazing to now have three additional states in confirmed concurrent development.
That said, as the sim has continued to push eastward, it’s now getting to the point where the newly-added states are gradually becoming smaller, which might explain why the progress of the current slate seems like it is moving at blitz speed.
Interestingly, SCS has opted to go more east and even a little bit south after Nebraska, before tackling North and South Dakota.
Those states are particularly large, so it’s clear they’re being saved for later down the line. Regardless, the goal of completing all of the Lower 48 is excitingly becoming more and more complete.
