Garry’s Mod is all about creativity and the community has spawned a whole host of user generated content. Some of that content is about to be wiped, that’s if it features something Nintendo related.
Over time, the Steam Workshop will become barren of any Nintendo content due to the company disallowing it on Garry’s Mod. If you’ve already realised that some Steam Workshops are missing, Facepunch Studios has stepped in to provide clarity.
The end of Nintendo content in Garry’s Mod
In a statement released on Steam, the team address, “some of you may have noticed that certain Nintendo related workshop items have recently been taken down.” It has been explained that “this is not a mistake, the takedowns came from Nintendo.”
The team behind the popular sandbox game believe that this is “fair enough” and Nintendo “don’t want you playing with that stuff in Garry’s Mod – that’s their decision, we have to respect that and take down as much as we can.”
Taking down all this content is not going to be an easy task, as there’s “20 years of uploads to go through.” In order to help out with the efforts, fans are urged to delete “Nintendo related uploads and never upload them again.”
Nintendo has always been extremely protective of its IP and its lawyers are always hard at work taking down content. Just two months ago, the Big N threatened to take the creators of the Yuzu Switch emulator to court. Also, the highly anticipated Steam launch of the GameCube/Wii emulator, Dolphin was scrapped due to Nintendo hitting those plans with their ban hammer.
With Garry’s Mod being two decades old, it’s interesting that now is the time they’ve chosen to enforce this. There’s thousands of pages of content containing Nintendo characters, levels, and features, so there’s no disputing that there’s a difficult job ahead to remove this.
