When you open Fortnite’s Creative tab, you’ll be greeted by an array of unique gameplay experiences and opportunities to rack up some extra XP. Epic Games will now be hitting Creative maps and user-generated experiences with an age rating in Fortnite. The changes are set to go into effect on November 14, 2023.
User-generated content is becoming more advanced, especially with the launch of Unreal Editor, allowing for Fortnite Creative 2.0. As the game “evolves from its Battle Royale roots into a broader ecosystem,” big adjustments are being made to who can access this content.
All user-created content will have an age rating in Fortnite
As reported by Eurogamer, Epic Games will manage content using systems put in place by the IARC (International Age Rating Coalition.)
In a statement, the ESRB president and IARC chairperson, Patricia Vance said:
“By implementing the IARC rating system within Fortnite, Epic continues to elevate its commitment to providing families with tools to make informed decisions about which experiences are appropriate for their children. As Fortnite evolves from its Battle Royale roots into a broader ecosystem containing a variety of content from Epic and other creators, it’s especially important that parents have a clear understanding of what their children want to access.”
Fortnite are also planning the introduction of parental controls that can be used to block players from accessing islands that are above a particular rating. That’s not all, as a parental control option will be added that completely stops children from being able to design their own Creative maps and modes.
Fortnite’s overall rating won’t change, but it seems Epic Games are taking steps to protect themselves as third-party content becomes more prominent on their platforms.
