Summer Game Fest officially returns in June 2024

Industry legend Geoff Keighley has confirmed that Summer Game Fest will return in 2024.

The video game showcase has been getting larger and larger since its inception in 2020 and is now set to bring a “spectacular celebration of what’s next in gaming” once more.

The show goes on

Geoff Keighley, who spearheads Summer Game Fest, in addition to The Game Awards, confirmed via X (formerly known as Twitter) that the showcase will return in June of next year.

While the show initially started out back in 2020 running throughout the course of the summer, this year saw its announcements being condensed into one big E3-style presentation, with an on-stage show that was also livestreamed for the digital audience. It’s likely that next year’s showcase won’t be much different.

Trading places

Summer Game Fest has been deemed by many in the gaming community to be the unofficial replacement for E3.

For just over two decades, E3 was the tentpole event in all of gaming for the summer. From major game and hardware announcements, to elaborate show floors with demos and decorations. Despite its perceived importance, the pomp and pageantry surrounding it diminished in recent years, with big names pulling out such as Sony back in 2019.

E3 2020 was cancelled due to the pandemic and despite efforts to revive it, it has not returned since. Summer Games Fest has gone uncontested this whole time. E3 2024 has already been cancelled and it’s still unclear if it will once again try to return in 2025.

Meanwhile, Keighley’s show has been doing just fine and slid neatly into E3’s place as one of the premier yearly industry showcases alongside events such as PAX, GamesCom and the Tokyo Game Show.

2024 is set to be filled with big announcements, from updates on already revealed titles, to expected surprises such as the possible unveiling of Nintendo’s next system. Summer Game Fest 2024 is bound to put the spotlight on several of such announcements.
