Riot Games released a surprise statement last week, explaining that VCT Americas would remain as a 10-team league due to The Guard “[failing] to meet the deadline to agree to the Team Participation Agreement.”
However, the most shocking decision Riot made was to disallow the roster from finding another organisation. Since then, Riot reversed their decision and The Guard players are now supposedly in talks with G2 and FlyQuest.
After being under huge pressure from the community, including fans, players, and content creators, Riot backtracked on their decision. The Guard players were then released from their contracts and could begin exploring new opportunities. It appears that those new opportunities are coming in thick and fast.
Could we see The Guard roster under G2 or FlyQuest next season?
Spanish VALORANT insider, Lembo, shared on X (previously Twitter) that G2 are interested in signing The Guard roster to compete in the next VCT Americas. According to Lembo, his sources have revealed that FlyQuest are also in talks with The Guard players.
Both organisations have a storied history in gaming and esports, including other Riot titles. G2 made an appearance in the League of Legends 2019 World Championship Grand Final, while FlyQuest had an impressive 14-4 record in this year’s LCS Spring split.
With VALORANT Champions 2023 concluding just over a week ago, the offseason has only just begun. It’s still early days and nothing is set in stone. We’ll have to keep our eyes peeled for an official announcement in the coming weeks.
One thing is for sure, despite the setbacks The Guard players have faced, it won’t be the last time we see them in action.
