The original Modern Warfare story came to an end with Modern Warfare 3 which launched all the way back in 2011. Naturally, one may assume that the rebooted trilogy could follow suit. However, Infinity Ward has hinted at further Modern Warfare entries, suggesting that the iconic series won’t conclude any time soon.
The Call of Duty franchise has a long history of lore which has developed through characters and locations, spanning across both multiplayer and singleplayer experiences.
Modern Warfare 3 is just the beginning
The narrative director for the Call of Duty franchise, Brian Bloom, told the Washington Post that “the story of the rebooted trilogy will extend beyond this year’s release, with character arcs planned for long-term stories told in future games that build off the new established storylines.”
“We think of character arcs as going one way, but they can also fall off their arc, they can go backwards, people can evolve and devolve,” Bloom continues. “All these things, they offer rich, fertile ground to tell stories, and that’s not going to stop. In fact, I would say we’re just getting started.”
Modern Warfare 3’s campaign will feature linear, cinematic missions that pick up immediately after the events of last year’s Modern Warfare 2.
World War 3 has broken out and fan favourite characters from Task Force 141 have to stop Makarov in his tracks. As shown in the reveal trailer, the campaign will include a reimagined version of the ‘No Russian’ mission from the original Modern Warfare 2.
Those who pre-order Modern Warfare 3 will get to play the campaign up to a week early. Modern Warfare 3 will fully launch on November 10.
